Farmington Hills’ Salting & Snow Plowing Information

The following information was received from the City of Farmington Hills in regards to salting and plowing of subdivisions.

Reminders for residents and motorists:

Major roads and designated school bus routes in the City receive the highest priority; they are plowed and salted during any storm bringing any accumulation of snow or ice. Local (neighborhood) streets are plowed following an accumulation of four inches or more of snow, once the storm has ended.

Please note: The City makes a practice of rotating which neighborhoods are plowed first after each snow event.

In addition, when the snowstorm is large enough for City staff to begin plowing the neighborhood streets, we ask for your help and patience. The fewer number of cars that are parked on the street before and during the snowstorm allow our equipment to more efficiently push the snow to the curb, opening the streets up for emergency vehicles, parking, mail delivery, and trash removal.

Please move your vehicles off the street during these storms. This is particularly important for homes located on cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets where on-street parking makes these streets impassable.

There will be snow buildup at the end of your driveway and it is the responsibility of the resident to clear it. Snow plows are angled to the right for plowing from the centerline of the street to the curb, making the deposit of snow at the end of driveways a natural byproduct of plowing operations. The City is unable to return to clear the deposit at the end of your driveway and is unable to prevent this from occurring at over 23,000 driveways city-wide.

Please help alleviate snow accumulation by clearing the area to the right of your driveway before a snow plow comes down your street.

Curbside mailboxes may become blocked by plowed snow. The U.S. Post Office has a policy regarding access to mailboxes, which requires snow to be removed enough to allow the mail trucks to drive up to the mailbox for delivery.

Please keep your mailbox clear to maintain mail delivery; this is the responsibility of the resident.

Removing snow around fire hydrants greatly assists the Fire Department and may just save your home in the event of a fire. It is important that fire hydrants be visible and accessible at all times.
